i died on facebook
As we increasingly shift our activities and interactions online, we must consider the fate of our digital counterparts when we die. Do they exist indefinitely, or do they perish too?
I died on Facebook is a digital artwork that challenges our traditional perceptions of death and identity in the age of social media. The work is presented as an interactive gaming experience set in a digital cemetery. This virtual cemetery is populated by virtual tombstones, each representing a memorialised profile on the social media platform Facebook.
The installation can be experienced in two modes: a direct mode, in which the visitor becomes a player and actively interacts with the virtual environment, and an indirect mode, in which the viewer can see other participants interacting with the work. Through both modes, I died on Facebook stimulates a profound reflection on our digital presence, mortality and the transformation of human interactions in a digital context.
The artwork addresses crucial concepts such as the gamification of death, digital identity, interactivity and the translation of human experiences into the digital context. Through this experience, viewers are invited to question how the concept of death is evolving in the age of social media, and how our online activities can persist over time, challenging the boundary between physical and digital presence.
